Manikandan advances to the last eight stage

MADURAI : Top seed M.R. Manikandan of Chennai entered the boys' under-19 singles quarterfinal of the Tamil Nadu State junior badminton championship defeating A.K. Sudharsan of Virudhunagar 21-12, 21-15 here on Friday.

Aditi Anand and Rashmi S. Babu, both from Coimbatore entered the girls' under-10 singles final.

Boys: U-19: singles (pre-quarterfinals): M.R. Manikandan bt A.K. Sudharsan 21-12, 21-15; Velavan (Che) bt N. Palaniandavar triumphs

Arulmigu Palaniandavar Arts College, Palani regained the Phoenix Trophy after a lapse of three years defeating the defending champion, Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar College, Usilampatti 31-23 in the final of the Madurai Kamaraj University `B' Zone inter-collegiate kabaddi tournament at Madurai on Friday.

Other results (semifinals): APA, Palani bt HKRH College, Uthamapalayam 38-12; PMT, Usilampatti bt Arulanandar Karumathur 37-26.

Laxman, Hasan shine

Half centuries by Laxman (65) and Hasan (52) helped Anitha Kumar HSS (Thandapatti) defeat Muhyideen MHSS, Kayalpatnam by 160 runs in the final of the Tuticorin district schools cricket tournament and lift the TDCA-Intra District School trophy at Tuticorin recently.

The scores: Final: Anitha Kumar HSS 269 for six in 40 overs (Laxman 65, Hasan 52, Irfan Khan 47) bt Muhyideen MHSS 109 in 24.3 overs (Laxman three for 28, Irfan Khan three for 15).

Double for Coimbatore

Coimbatore scored a double by winning the table tennis and carrom team titles in the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board inter-zonal women's games meet at Madurai on Friday.

Coimbatore beat Trichy 3-0 in the table tennis final and beat Chennai 3-0 in the carrom final.
