Several bookstalls raided

Staff Reporter

Action follows arrest of suspected SIMI activists

KOZHIKODE: Simultaneous raids were conducted on several bookstores in the city on Friday based on the statements given by suspected activists of the Students Islamic Movement of India, who were arrested in Ernakulam recently. The police seized books and CDs during the raids. The police said they were yet to verify the seized material.

On Court Road, the police broke open and searched a shop. The bookstore, set up just a fortnight ago, remained closed for the last two days.

Raids were also conducted on bookstores on Mavoor Road, near the Tali Temple, SM Street and Cherootty Road under the supervision of K. Jayendran, Assistant Commissioner, Kozhikode South, and C.M. Pradeepkumar, Assistant Commissioner, Kozhikode North.

Town Circle Inspector A.J. Babu coordinated the raids.

Yuva Morcha charge

The Yuva Morcha has alleged that the ban on the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) was not being imposed properly in Kerala.

Addressing the media here on Friday Yuva Morcha State president K. Surendran said the release of the 13 alleged SIMI workers who were arrested at Kochi recently, without even questioning was a clear indication of the lenient attitude.

He alleged that SIMI activists were operating here with cooperation of some organisations.

The Yuva Morcha demanded that the police officer who released the SIMI supporters who were arrested be suspended.
