Clijsters to miss U.S. Open

The Belgian may miss Fed Cup final too

BRUSSELS : Defending champion Kim Clijsters will miss the U.S. Open because of a left wrist injury. The U.S. Open starts on August 28.

A posting on her website on Thursday said an MRI exam and X-ray showed the problem is worse than originally believed and that the Belgian will be sidelined for the coming weeks — and probably two months, meaning she'll also miss the Fed Cup final in September.

The No. 2-ranked Clijsters was forced to quit during the second set of her match on Wednesday at the hard-court tournament in Montreal.

She had the wrist taped early in that set, but then fell on the wrist while reaching for a shot. She'll return to Belgium for more tests, her website said. — AP
