KHAMMAM: The third phase gram panchayat polls held in Palvancha and Kothagudem divisions of the district were peaceful. The turnout was 83 per cent in Kothagudem division and 78 per cent in Palvancha division. The remote Pinapaka gram panchayat, a stronghold of the Maoists, polled over 85 per cent votes. The polling was around 65 per cent in Manuguru. Some of the villages perched on the Godavari banks had the election even though the flood level in the river was on the rise. The officials said that the flood had no bearing on the third phase polls. Repoll has been ordered in Govindrala of Karepalli mandal following an attempt to snatch some ballot papers in one of the polling booths. In Rajivnagar colony of Pinapaka, a voter died of A heart attack while going out of the poling booth after casting his vote. The voter, Mamidi Ramaswamy was reportedly under heavy pressure from two of the candidates contesting for the office of the gram sarpanch in the village. Though he was sick, he came for voting as it happened to be a keen contest.
