Skill improvement vital, dentists told

Special Correspondent

COIMBATORE: Skill improvement through constant updating on advances in treatment was vital for dentists in building faith among patients, the past Indian Dental Association (IDA) president, Subash Chandra Shetty, said here on Friday.

Impression

Inaugurating a `Seminar on Dentistry', he said continuing dental education went a long way in skill improvement provided it did not become a `casual course'. Dentists should not be under the impression "What I treat is the best".

Infection

Quality played a very important role in building patients' faith in the dentists. If the patient did not return to the same dentist in the event of a secondary infection after a root canal treatment, there were chances of his spreading a word on this to ten others. This would not augur well for the dentist who did the procedure. "Service to patients is service to dentistry itself", he asserted.

Stating that dentists should also get their due respect from society, he reminded them that it would come through skill and excellence.

Biotechnology

Dr. Shetty emphasised on research in dentistry. "Be it information technology, biotechnology or pharmaceuticals, the question asked across the world is whether there is enough research in these fields in India." There was enough potential in this country. Therefore there should be enough focus on research, he said.

The organising secretary of the seminar, V.M. Veerabahu, also stressed continuing dental education. He had conducted many such programmes during his tenure as national secretary of the IDA from 1986 to 2002 because only then could practising dentists serve patients better.
