Tiger keeps forest staff on tenterhooks

Special Correspondent

Udhagamandalam: A tiger kept forest officials here on tenterhooks on Thursday.

Early in the morning tea garden workers at Sholur Kokkal near here had informed the officials that they had seen a tiger among the tea bushes.

The officials, including the Wildlife Warden, Rakesh Kumar Dogra, and the District Forest Officer, the Nilgiris North, K. Kandasamy, and forest veterinarian Kalaivanan who went to the spot spent several hours watching the spot where the carnivore was lying.

Since the animal was lying under a bush and appeared to be sick, they did not want to take the risk of darting it with a sedative. With light failing, they consulted the Chief Wildlife Warden and decided to wait till Friday morning to deal with the situation.

Mr. Kandasamy told The Hindu that the people living nearby had been warned not to get too close to the spot.
