Poor families left out in survey for ration cards, says Congress

Staff Correspondent

Madikeri: The Madikeri Block Congress workers, on Friday, urged Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav to initiate steps to set right anomalies in identifying beneficiaries before distribution of ration cards.

Led by Madikeri Block Congress president K.M. Ganesh, workers took out a procession from Mahadevpet to the Deputy Commissioner's office. Mr. Ganesh said the Food and Civil Supplies Department had set out to distribute rations cards to 1,43,231 beneficiaries in all categories. But, even after the re-survey, many poor people were left out.

He said there were more such people living in areas such as Indiranagar, Chamundeshwarinagar, Mallikarjunanagar, Mangaladevinagar, Rajarajeshwarinagar, Kannandabane, Mahadevpet, Hindustani School and Makhangalli. The survey team had omitted their names since they were not found in their houses during the visit by survey teams, he said.

In many cases, above poverty line (APL) cards were given to the below poverty line (BPL) beneficiaries, workers alleged. They demanded that at least three litres of kerosene be given to the APL cardholders in Madikeri city as electricity supply failures had become regular in the evenings. A memorandum was handed over to officials.
