MANGALORE: Representatives of "Pambada" sect who don the role of "bhootas" in "bhootaradhane" (spirit worship) have objected to the depiction of spirit worship on public platforms and undermining its purity. Addressing presspersons here on Friday K. Prabhakara, honorary president, Pambada Yane Daivadigara Samaja Sangha, said that spirit worship was a unique form of worship in the coastal belt. In recent years it has become a fashion to dress in the costume of "bhootas" and exhibit them on public platforms and in front of foreigners in the name of folk art. Mr. Prabhakara said that playing the role of "bhootas" was a profession for many people belonging to the "Pambada" sect.
Insult
Exhibiting spirit worship in annual day programmes, dramas, dance programmes, processions, and functions of political parties was an insult to the profession. Mr. Prabhakara said the sangha submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner requesting him to prevent the display of spirit worship.
