Sholayar reservoir overflows; farmers rejoice

Staff Reporter

POLLACHI: Giving a major relief to water managers of Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) here, Sholayar dam near Valparai overflowed on Thursday. Heavy rain has been lashing the plateau for the last couple of days.

With water level reaching 162.77 feet against the full reservoir level of 160 feet on Friday 8 a.m., 2,678 cusecs was let off to Parambikulam reservoir through the saddle dam, sources said. Once the water level reaches 160 feet, surplus water flows through the saddle dam, which is on the rear side of the dam. If the water level crosses 165 feet, then the water spills over to the Kerala Sholayar reservoir, they added.

With the surplus water being let out from the Sholayar reservoir in the last two days, Parambikulam dam received a steady inflow. Water level stood at 60.15feet against the full reservoir level of 72 feet. The storage touched 15,181 mcft against the full storage capacity of 17,820 mcft.

Southwest monsoon has not been effective this year compared to that of last year. Officials are worried over the storage level at the group dams of PAP With the monsoon becoming stronger on Thursday Upper Neerar recorded 209 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours.

The deputy superintendent engineer, P. Ramamoorthy, hoped there would be adequate water for irrigation. Water will be released from Aliyar reservoir to Pollachi canal, Vettaikaranpudur canal and Sethumadai canal on September 1.
