COIMBATORE: It was a fun-filled day for the children who participated in the Krishna Jayanti celebration organised by the Lions Clubs International District 324-B1 here on Friday. They dressed up as Krishna, Radha and Arjuna, basking in the attention of their parents and friends. Organised exclusively for disabled children, 125 students with physical disabilities from eight schools in the city participated in several competitions. While fancy dress was clearly the most favoured item, Gita recitation and painting too had a few participants. Some of the other competitions were solo song on Lord Krishna, group and solo dance and colouring. "Disabled children don't have many opportunities to showcase talents," said K.S. Balasubramanian, Cabinet Secretary of the Club. "So, this time, we decided to organise a special function for them regarding Sri Krishna Jayanthi," he added. The Club celebrated every occasion with an aim to promote communal harmony, Mr. Balasubramaniam said. "The celebration is not confined to Hindu children. In fact, a Muslim student recited the Gita at the function. By including every one in the celebrations, we hope to instil the need for tolerance in children's minds," he said. Next week the club would celebrate Mother Teresa's birth anniversary.
Tolerance
All the participants were given certificates. Kovai Rehabilitation Information Services for Handicapped, Kasthuri Baba Gandhi Oral Training Institute, Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Society for the Handicapped, Seva Nilayam for Girls, Sathguru Seva Nilayam School for Boys, CRCS, Grey Town, Corporation Deaf and Dumb School, R.S. Puram and Vidya Vikasini Opportunity School were the institutions that participated.
