Coimbatore: The Coimbatore District Grape Growers' Association has urged that nationalised banks waive agricultural loans for grape farmers in the district, whose lands have been affected by drought from 2000 to 2005. In a petition to M. Kannappan, Thondamuthur MLA, the association said that grape cultivation had been "totally affected" by the drought, leading to farmers being unable to repay their loans. Thousands of farming families had been saved when the State Government had waived agricultural loans advanced by cooperative banks. However, those who had taken loans from nationalised and commercial banks still faced the burden of repayment. The association sought the help of Mr. Kannappan in getting the loans waived.
