Kandaleru water expected today

Andhra Pradesh releasing 1,350 cubic feet per second of water

CHENNAI : Chennai's water supply will be augmented in the coming months with the water released from Kandaleru reservoir in Andhra Pradesh expected to reach the Tamil Nadu border at Uthukottai on Saturday afternoon.

The Kandaleru water had travelled 140 km through the Kandaleru-Poondi canal by Friday evening, a Public Works department official said. It had only 12 km to reach the inter-state border and is expected to reach the zero point by Saturday evening.

Andhra Pradesh was releasing about 1,350 cubic feet per second of water and the water would be realised after catering to the irrigation needs and domestic consumption en route.

Ministers from both the states and officials were expected to participate in a function on Saturday evening at the zero point in Uthukottai to mark the Kandaleru water release to Tamil Nadu.

Besides Metrowater and PWD officials, Andhra Pradesh Major Irrigation Minister, P. Lakshmaiah and Tamil Nadu Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin and Public Works Minister K. Ponmudi were expected to take part in the function, according to PWD sources.

At present, Kandaleru reservoir has a storage of 26.4 thousand million cubic feet of water. The officials here expect to realise at least 500 cusecs as initial inflow on Saturday.

Water realised at the zero point would be transferred and stored at Poondi reservoir, which has a storage of 282 million cubic feet, and then treated for city supply.
