New roads and projects aimed at decongesting the existing ones are in the pipeline, the Minister told the Assembly on Friday.

The construction of 62-km-long Outer Ring Road connecting Vandalur in the south and Minjur in the north is a Rs. 500-crore project. It has been proposed to lay four lanes for the entire stretch in first phase of the project.

The detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared shortly.

Meanwhile, DPRs for most projects aimed at decongesting the city roads under the World Bank-assisted Tamil Nadu Urban Development Project — III are under preparation.

The Government will go ahead with rail projects starting with the extension of Mass Rapid Transit System from Velachery to St. Thomas Mount at a cost of Rs. 416 crore. The State Government will implement the project on a formula of cost-sharing with the Union Government.

To further reduce the traffic congestion, the State will complete the Metro Rail Project. The revised budget estimate for the project is Rs. 300 lakh.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has been requested to finalise the DPR.

Decongesting the central business district, as envisaged by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority's first master plan, will gain force with further development of the Food Grains Market Complex at Koyambedu.

    500 shops

Recently the authorities have sanctioned the setting up of 500 shops over 15 acres at a cost of Rs. 61.8 crore.

The Government will also chalk out a fresh action plan for the IT corridor to meet the infrastructure requirements.

It will also start constructing multi-level car parking complexes once the detailed feasibility report and detailed project reports are finalised, the Minister told the Assembly.
