Bangalore: The State Government was considering three proposals before finalising the Greater Bangalore Corporation, sources in the BMP said on Friday.

The State Government was planning merging the eight urban local bodies (ULBs), which comprise seven city municipal councils (CMCs) and one town municipal council (TMC), into a Greater Bangalore area and have a civic body on the lines of the BMP to manage it.

Another proposal is that the eight ULBs could be divided on the basis of their location, north and south.

The city would then have three civic bodies (including the BMP) to manage infrastructure and provision of basic amenities. The State Government is also looking at a third option, which is to merge the eight ULBs with the BMP. The ULBs were happy about any proposal, which would lead to better management.

Byatrayanaura CMC Commissioner C.K. Dashvanth said, "The BMP has better financial resources and organisation. They would be able to manage the CMCs better."

The last proposal would increase the population managed by the BMP to more than 85 lakhs, up from the current 65 lakhs.

It would increase the area managed by the civic body from 226 sq km to 676 sq km.

The moot question, however, is whether the already over-burdened BMP can handle the additional burden. BMP Commissioner K. Jairaj believes that with appropriate re-organisation and more resources, the BMP would be able to manage the extra load well.
