Thiruvananthapuram
Staff Reporter
Thiruvananthapuram: The five-member medical professionals' team deputed by the Centre, now on an inspection tour of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, was learnt to have sought a commitment from the State Government that adequate manpower would be provided for the smooth functioning of the hospital, once it was upgraded and new facilities were added. The state-of the-art equipment to be acquired by the college and new space to be created would not be utilised properly if the State did not provide enough staff, including medical experts and paramedical staff, the team said. It expressed concern at the current staff shortage in the college, which affected healthcare delivery, it was learnt. The team, which was here to scrutinise the Rs.100-crore development proposal the college had under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, visited the hospital block, the casualty wing and the Trauma Care building on Friday.
Shifting casualty wing
The team was learnt to have endorsed the proposal to shift the casualty wing to its earlier location near the main road, from where it was more easily accessible. The status of the Trauma Care block, completed almost three years ago but yet to be commissioned, was also discussed. If the casualty wing was shifted back to the old building, constructing a new trauma unit near it would have to be thought of as these two should function as a single unit, it was pointed out.
