Holiday for schools

Kochi: Schools in the district will remain closed on Saturday and September 16 on account of the PSC examinations held at the schools, said a statement issued by the Deputy Director of Education. — Staff Reporter

Best principal award

Kochi: The former principal of the Maharaja's college for Women, Thiruvananthapuram, Ganga Devi has won the Dr. M.V. Pylee award of the Kerala Higher Education Trust for the best principal of Kerala for the 2004-06 academic years, a statement issued by secretary of the trust said. The award carries cash prize of Rs.10,000, citation and plaque. — Staff Reporter

Karshaka Congress stages protest

Kochi: The district committee of the Karshaka Congress organised a dharna at the Boat jetty against the agricultural policies of the Government. Benny Behannan, general secretary of the KPCC, inaugurated the dharna. K.V. Jacob, district president of the organisation, presided. — Staff Reporter

Six arrested on

rape charge

Kochi: The police arrested six persons on Friday on charges of raping a minor girl. There are 16 accused in the incident, which took place in Thrissur, the police said. The victim hails from Cheranalloor, the police said. — Staff Reporter

Power supply to be disrupted

KOCHI: There will be no power supply in areas near Petta Junction, Gandhi Square Junction and Mukkotil Road in Thripunithura from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. — Staff Reporter

Air India Express to operate additional flight

NEDUMBASSERY: Air India Express will operate an additional service in the Kochi-Dubai sector on August 29. Flight IX 213 A is scheduled to depart from Kochi at 11.15 p.m. and reach Dubai at 1.30 a.m. The low-cost carrier is set to operate more additional services in the coming weeks considering the heavy flow of passengers to various Gulf destinations. — A Correspondent

Insurance officers' protest

Kochi: The Joint Forum of the Development Officers Association held a silent dharna at the regional office of the New India Assurance Company in the city on Friday demanding wage hike and promotions for the field staff. The officers, who held placards with a black scarf tied around their mouth, took up the protest to highlight their demands. — Staff Reporter

Reception planned

KOCHI: Francesco Muceois, Confederal President of Don Bosco Past Pupils, will be accorded a reception in the city on Saturday. Mr. Muceois is on a visit to the State to meet and exchange ideas about the Don Bosco Past Pupils' Association and its work all over the world. He will be given a reception at Hotel Circle Manor, Desabhimani Road at 7 p.m. The Don Bosco Past Pupils' Association represents lakhs of past pupils of institutions run by the Salesians of Don Bosco, the religious order founded by Don Bosco, a Catholic priest, in the 19th century for the care of young people. — Staff Reporter
