ANANTAPUR: Jana Vignana Vedika (JVV) has urged the Centre to ban the sale and consumption of colas, as they were harmful to health. Talking to newspersons here on Saturday JVV leaders M. Geyanand, T. Ramesh, S. Bhaskar, S. Rahamatullah and T. Prakasam urged the State Government to implement the ban in educational institutions and hospitals. The Government should also take up a campaign to create awareness on the adverse impact of soft drinks, they suggested. Pesticides like DDT, linden, malathion, chloropyriphos and heptachlor were detected in the colas even by Government institutions like CFTRI, Mysore and CFL, Kolkata, they alleged. A Joint Parliamentary Committee had also endorsed the reports. Recently, pesticide residue in soft drink samples was also found in the tests conducted by the Karnataka Government. The Government there had also registered cases against the soft drink companies. The soft drinks also contained phosphoric acid and caffeine, they stated. The JVV wanted stern action taken against institutions violating the ban.
