Trial run on Bijapur-Bagalkot track successful

Staff Correspondent

BIJAPUR: The newly-constructed 52-km broad gauge line between Telgi and Bagalkot passed all safety parameters on Friday.

The quality testing expert team headed by Commissioner of Railway Safety Pranab Kumar

Sen tested the strength of the broad gauge track by running a trial train.

Deputy Chief Engineer (Construction) of South Western Railway, Saibaba told The Hindu that Mr. Sen and other members were fully satisfied with the standard of the new track. The trial train was run up to a speed of 75 kmph. A formal order clearing the track for normal train schedule was likely to be issued next week, he added.

With this, the 200-km broad gauge work on the 300-km Sholapur-Gadag line has been completed.

Gauge conversion of the 100-km stretch between Sholapur and Bijapur was completed in 1998, and local trains are run regularly. A 45-km track between Bijapur and Telgi was readied a few weeks ago.

However, it is not clear when the SWR will extend the train service beyond Bijapur up to Bagalkot.
