Award for Bellandur Gram Panchayat

Bangalore: Governor of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh Rameshwar Thakur will confer this year's Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi Best Panchayat Award on Bellandur Gram Panchayat in Tirupati on Sunday. Panchayat president Laxmamma will receive the award instituted by the Academy of Grassroots Studies and Research in India and Rajiv Gandhi Development Foundation, Tirupati.

One-minute halt at Patchur station

BANGALORE: South Western Railway has introduced a one-minute halt for Train No. 6520/6519 (Bangalore-Jolarpettai Express) at Patchur station from Sunday, according to a Railway press release. — Staff Reporter

Hall tickets despatched to study centres

Bangalore: Kuvempu University's Directorate of Distance Education will conduct examinations for undergraduate and postgraduate courses from August 30. BESCOM lineman electrocuted

TUMKUR: Thimme Gowda, 50, a Bangalore Electricity Supply Company lineman, was electrocuted on Saturday. The police said he was working on a power line on the Siddaganga Institute of Technology main road when he came in contact with a live wire. The police said the lineman was shifted to hospital in a critical condition, where he died.

Selection of Haj pilgrims on August 29

BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Haj Committee will select Haj pilgrims by drawing lots on August 29 at 11 a.m. at Khuddus Saheb Idgah Maidan on Miller's Road here, according to an official press release.

Manjunath Bhandary to attend AKKA meet

BANGALORE: Manjunath Bhandary, general secretary, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), has been invited to attend a three-day America Kannada Kootagala Aagara (AKKA) conference in Washington DC from September 1.

AKKA has decided to celebrate in a grand manner the 50th year of the formation of the State. The fourth AKKA conference will be attended by Kannada writers, poets and others.

Mr. Bhandary has been also invited by the Federation of Indian Associations, New York, to attend the "India Day Parade" to be held on August 20 and 21, said a press note issued by the KPCC.

On his way back, he will participate in the world conference of Eisenhower Fellows in Istanbul, Turkey, from September 10 to 13, the note said. — Special Correspondent

Assault on employee condemned

BELLARY: The Bellary district unit of Karnataka State Government Employees Association, has strongly condemned the alleged assault of an employee of the Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Science (VIMS) hospital here on Friday by some people who were staging dharna in protest against lack of facilities and treatment at the hospital.

In a press release, association president K. Chandrashekar said a memorandum would be submitted to the Home Minister M.P. Prakash, Tourism Minister Sriramulu and Deputy Commissioner urging them to initiate action against the guilty and also to take steps to prevent such incidents. — Staff Correspondent

Device to detect glaucoma

MYSORE: The city's first Nerve Fibre Layer Analyzer, a state-of-the-art tool for early diagnosis of glaucoma, has been installed at the Usha Kiran Charitable Trust and Eye Hospital. According to a press statement from the hospital, "The equipment is capable of detecting glaucoma earlier than the automated perimetry". — Staff Correspondent

Company to sponsor ten students

MYSORE: Icad, an engineering design and development company, has offered to support the education and boarding expenses of ten students at Suttur Math hostel near here.

Icad's Chief Operating Officer Shivakumar Swamy presented a cheque of Rs. 50,001 to Suttur Math Seer Sri Shivarathri Desikendra Swamiji at the inauguration of the company's new facility at Hebbal Industrial Area in Mysore on Saturday.
