Chain-snatchers held, jewellery worth Rs. 1.5 lakhs recovered

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Two alleged chain-snatchers have been arrested by the Special Staff of the West Delhi police. The police claim to have recovered jewellery worth Rs. 1.5 lakhs, 18 mobile phones and firearms from the accused.

According to the police, accused Vipin and Vishal were arrested at Tilak Nagar in West Delhi on Friday evening. Vipin allegedly fired at the police party before he was caught. In all, the police claim to have recovered 10 gold chains, a country-made revolver and live cartridges at the instance of the accused. The police have also seized a motorcycle and a scooter from the accused.

The police said Vipin and Vishal used to move around marketplaces on a motorcycle and indulge in chain snatching. Vipin's brother, Ajay, allegedly used to follow the duo on another motorcycle.

The moment Vipin and Vishal would snatch a chain and escape, Ajay would reach the spot ostensibly to help out the victim. He would even offer to chase the culprits. Ajay, would thus manage to divert the attention of the victim by asking for vague details.
