BANGALORE: The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) will launch the `Suvarna Khata' scheme from September. The aim is to issue khata to property owners within a time frame. The facility will be provided through a single window. BMP Commissioner K. Jairaj said this at an interactive meeting with Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) organised by CIVIC Bangalore here on Saturday. He said people had been complaining of delays and problems in obtaining khata and hence the new system. Khata seekers had to file applications and attach the required documents before submitting them at the office of the assistant revenue officer. They would get the khata in 30 or 45 days (to be specified). In case of emergency, the BMP was planning to offer tatkal khata for a higher fee, Mr. Jairaj said.
Garbage collection
The BMP would implement a streamlined scheme for garbage collection within five weeks. Chief Health Officer Vijayalakshmi said tenders had been finalised and conditions imposed on contractors. The officer said committees, comprising BMP officials and RWA members, would be formed at zonal and head office levels to monitor garbage collection. The commissioner announced that joint commissioners of each of three zones had been directed to hold public grievances redressal meeting every week. He said serious grievances had to be sorted out within 30 days. The commissioner said he was also willing to attend such meetings once in a month. To a suggestion from an RWA member on rainwater harvesting for existing buildings, the commissioner asked RWAs to come out with a comprehensive scheme. A system was in operation in 32 parks of the BMP, he noted. On encroachment of BMP property, Mr. Jairaj asked people to inform BMP joint commissioners of any encroachment. A survey conducted by BMP in July resulted in identification of as many as 82 encroachments and they would be cleared with the help of Bangalore Metropolitan Task Force, he said.
`Suvarna Bengaluru'
The BMP would celebrate "Suvarna Bengaluru" from November 2006 to November 2007. The BMP had recently held discussions with writers and intellectuals from the city in this regard, said Veerappa, Public Relations Officer of the civic body. It was decided to name five streets and five parks in each zone after renowned literary figures. Musical evenings would be organised at select parks during the period. While a museum dedicated to Bangalore founder Kempe Gowda would come up, schools and colleges of BMP would get a new look. RWA members aired as many as 75 suggestions and grievances during the interaction. CIVIC office-bearers Padmini, Kathyayini and Mangala Nagaraj conducted the proceedings.
