dated August 21, 1956: Nehru's jeep accident

"Have you brought any stretcher for me," Prime Minister Nehru laughingly asked those waiting to receive him in New Delhi on August 19, as he stepped out of the plane, bringing him from Kutch, where he had met with a minor jeep accident on August 18 and received bruises. The Union Ministers, Pandit Pant and Mr. T.T. Krishnamachari, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, Mr. Shriman Narayan and others who had come to make anxious enquiries were evidently forestalled. After a few exchanges with them in a cheerful mood, Mr. Nehru remarked amidst loud laughter: "It is fortunate that only a man like Shastriji (Mr. Lal Bahadur Shastri) fell on me (in the accident). If he were a heavier man, my condition would have been different."
