"Create awareness on renewable energy"

Energy Agency asked to hold programmes in rural areas

FOCUS ON ENERGY: Students of various institutions take out a rally in Pondicherry on Sunday to mark the Renewable Energy Day.

Pondicherry: Pondicherry Renewable Energy Agency should hold programmes in rural areas to create awareness among villagers on the utility of non-conventional sources of energy, according to V. Narayanasamy, MP.

Distributing mementos and prizes to students and also to those who have been adopting renewable source of energy at home and in organisations in Pondicherry as part of the celebration of the Rajiv Gandhi Renewable Energy Day here on Sunday, Mr. Narayanasamy felt sorry that neither the Chairman nor the Vice-Chairman of the Renewable Energy Agency were present at the function.

He said the cost of the solar power gadgets and other materials that could be used under non-conventional energy sources at home and at offices should be within the reach of the patrons and subsidies could be available adequately.

He paid rich compliments to Rajiv Gandhi for preparing the youth to become scientifically proficient. The birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi was celebrated as Renewable Energy Day under a scheme of the Ministry of Non-conventional Energy.

Local Administration Minister Malladi Krishna Rao handed prizes to students and others who were proficient in various competitions held by the Agency.

S P Sivakumar MLA and the Chairperson of the Pondicherry Municipality Dr B. Sridevi also spoke.

Project Director of the Agency Ms Selvi explained the application of non-conventional sources of energy in Chief Secretariat and also propaganda the Agency had taken up covering a good number of sections of people. The drive would continue to enlarge the coverage under non-conventional sources of energy, she said. Members of self-help groups also spoke.

Earlier students of various educational institutions took out a rally from the Rajiv Gandhi statue to Beach Road where the Renewable Energy Day was celebrated.
