VELLORE: Any Indian offer of a political solution to the crisis in Sri Lanka should be acceptable to Sri Lankan Tamils, Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss said here on Sunday. "India should also take the responsibility for ensuring that the Sri Lankan Government implemented the solution offered by it, in the light of its past record of not implementing agreements reached with the Tamils," he told presspersons here. The PMK leader said that in the past, the Sri Lankan Government was deceiving the nations by saying that it was conducting talks with the Tamils, but without spelling out any solution.
"Situation similar to Fiji some years ago"
Dr. Ramadoss said the present situation in Sri Lanka was similar to the one faced some years ago when Mahendra Chowdhry, Fiji Prime Minister of Indian origin, had to relinquish office in the wake of the dissolution of the Fijian Parliament following an agitation against his Government. At that time, there was a strong demand from people in Delhi and Haryana that the Government of India should intervene to ensure the protection of Mr. Chowdhry. The situation of the Sri Lankan Tamils, who are having blood relations with the Tamils here, living just 20 km away, is similar, he said.
Seeks cooperation for Chief Minister's efforts
Hailing the efforts made by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in finding a solution to the Eelam Tamils' issue, Dr. Ramadoss said that everyone should cooperate in his efforts. Referring to the information obtained by Colombo that the India was going to send food to Sri Lanka on humanitarian grounds, the PMK leader said it should be sent through the Indian Red Cross Society and should be received and distributed in Sri Lanka by that country's Red Cross.
