Sourashtra College wins basketball title

MADURAI: Sourashtra College defeated MSS Wakfboard College 68-38 in the men's final of the MUTA basketball tournament here on Saturday.

The results: Men (final): Sourashtra 68 (Ganesh Babu 16, Athi Ganesh 14, Gajendran 14) bt MSSWBC 38, (Jokin Antony 10, Vijay Pandi 10). Semifinals: Sourashtra 51 bt VOC College, Tuticorin 30; MSSWBC 57 bt St. Xavier's College, Palayamkottai 53.

Trophy shared

R. Rishendar of SDAT Anna and M.B. Balakrishnan of SDAT Sakthi with 31 points each shared the individual championship for men at the 33rd Delphi TVS senior State swimming meet in Chennai on Sunday.

Gulnaz Rawoof of ORCA with 39 points won the women's title.

ACCET in last eight

Alagappa Chettiar CET, Karaikudi defeated Mt. Zion EC, Pudukottai 1-0 to enter the quarterfinals of the Anna University Zone-9 inter-engineering football tournament at Syed Ammal EC ground in Ramanathapuram on Sunday. Balaganapathy scored the winner in the 52nd minute.

Title for Annamalai

Annamalai University lifted the Rev. Fr. Montaud memorial trophy after defeating Lady Doak College 1-0 in the final of the State-Level inter-collegiate women's hockey tournament at Arulanandar College, Karumathur near Madurai on Saturday.

Earlier, Pachaiyappa's College, Chennai claimed the men's title by defeating Sourashtra College, Madurai 2-0.

Double for AUCPE

Alagappa University College of Physical Education, Karaikudi won both the men's and women's titles at the Alagappa University inter-collegiate basketball tournament in Ramanathapuram on Saturday.

The results:

Men (final): AUCPE 42 (Viju 14) bt Raja Doraisingam GAC, Sivagangai 25. Semifinals: AUCPE 61 bt Causanel CAS, Muthupettai 15; RDGA College 31 bt Syed Hameeda ASC, Kilakarai 20.

Women (league): AUCPE 28 (Krithika 11) bt RDGA College 18 (Kavitha 10); RDGA College 18 bt Causanel College 4; AUCPE 22 bt Causanel College 8.

Nithin wins gold

V. Nithin of Chennai won a gold and silver in the boys' events of the State Cadets fencing championship organised by the Tuticorin District Fencing Association on Friday. D. Devi of Salem also claimed two medals.

Title for AKCE

Arulmigu Kalasalingam College of Engineering defeated Dr. Sivanthi Adithanar College, Tiruchendur 2-0 in the final of the Anna University Zone-10 inter-engineering college football tournament at Krishnan Kovil on Sunday. Britto and Rengan were the scorers.

Third place: National EC, Kovilpatti 1(5) bt Govt. EC, Tirunelveli 1(4). Semifinals: AKCE 2 bt NEC, Kovilpatti 0; Dr. Sivanthi Adithanar 1(4) bt GEC, Tirunelveli 1(3).

Ramesh Flowers wins

Ramesh Flowers CC defeated Power CC by 68 runs in the final of the 17th L.P. Rayen memorial trophy district-level cricket tournament organised by the Tuticorin DCA on Saturday. Superintendent of Police Y. John Nicholson gave away the prizes.

The scores:

RFCC 212 for nine in 40 overs bt Power CC 144 for nine in 40 overs (Thirumani 52).

Badminton tournament

The Yonex senior State badminton championship organised by the Dindigul DBA will get underway at the Akshya Vidyalaya Indoor Stadium in Dindigul on August 22.

Big win for Tiruvallur

Prasanth powered his way to a brilliant 108 and Panchapakesan returned figures of five for 15 to help Tiruvallur register a resounding 271-run victory over Nilgiris in the TNCA inter-district under-19 cricket tournament in Theni on Sunday.

The scores: At Theni: Tiruvallur 342 for six in 50 overs (J. Prasanth 108, Venkatvasan 59, Abilash 39, Manoraj 41) bt Nilgiris 71 in 20.1 overs (Panchapakesan five for 15, Kishore three for nine).

Theni 200 for seven in 50 overs (Karuppasamy 33, J. Vijay 29 not out) lost to Erode 201 for seven in 46.2 overs (Aswaq 44, Nithiyanandan 37, Sasi Kumar 52 not out).

At Dindigul: Dindigul 297 for seven in 50 overs (A. Rajesh 88 not out, M. Mohamed 57, M. Mohamed Rafiq 65, T. Mruganantham three for 46) bt Pudhukottai 150 for eight in 34.5 overs (B.
