Unitech series called off

Special Correspondent

There are now plans to hold the tournament as a tri-series at a suitable date in 2007

Colombo: The signs were clear in the morning when sharp spells of rain washed out the second ODI of the Unitech series at the Singhalese Sports Club (SSC) ground. With the forecast predicting further downpour, there was only one way the ill-fated series was going to end.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed at around 8 p.m. that the series would be called off. Making the announcement, Samantha Alagama, media manager of the Sri Lankan team, said the SLC had no other option but to end the long hours of wait for everyone concerned. India manager Sanjay Jagdale said the decision was taken by the SLC.

There are now plans to hold the tournament as a tri-series. SLC is hopeful that South Africa, which pulled out of what was originally meant to be a tri-series due to security concerns, can be persuaded to take part, with the host and India, at a suitable date in 2007. Mr. Alagama sounded confident that South Africa would return to the island.

It is believed that the ICC President, Percy Sonn, who is in Sri Lanka, would play a key role in discussions to this effect. Mr. Sonn said one of the alternatives to avoid a tournament being devastated by weather would be to have an indoor stadium, like the Telstradome in Melbourne, in place.

Nobody was ``singing in the rain,'' this time.
