Chadrachoodan demands

dissolution of TDB

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Describing the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) as one tainted by corruption and misuse of power, RSP State secretary T.J. Chandrachoodan has demanded dissolution of the present Board and formation of a new seven-member Board comprising representatives of Dalits and women. In a statement here on Sunday, Prof. Chandrachoodan said there was large-scale corruption in recruitment to various posts. The actions of the Board were also resulting in erosion of the rights earned by Devaswom employees through long years of struggle, he added. - Special Correspondent

Wins best documentary award

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Noted documentary maker Shiny Jacob Benjamin has won the Atlas-Jeevan TV Telefest 2006 Best Documentary Award for her work `Bhagya: Janadhipathyathinte Pattukari'. The award carries a cash prize of Rs.50,000, citation and a statuette. The award jury comprised K.G. George, John Paul and Sreemoolanagaram Mohan. - Special Correspondent

Three DIC(K) leaders quit party

KOZHIKODE: Three office-bearers of the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) Youth Wing have resigned from their posts. At a press conference here on Sunday, DIC-K Youth Wing State general secretary Biju Scaria, Kozhikode district president Vinod Cheruvannur and district secretary Jagatmayan Chandrapuri announced their resignation from the party. They alleged that the DIC-K had lost its vision as a party, and under the circumstances they decided to return to the parent organisation, the Congress. - Staff Reporter

expresses concern

KOCHI: The Muslim Aikya Vedi has expressed concern over the reported move to label Muslim community and its youth as terrorists. The Vedi expressed its apprehension over the move of suspecting the motive of the youth and scholars who had assembled to discuss the role of the community in the Freedom Struggle, said a statement issued by Vedi president M.M. MP flays Asean

NEDUMBASSERY: Kerala Congress (J) MP P.C. Thomas on Sunday expressed reservations about the proposed trade agreement with the ASEAN countries. Talking to reporters at the Cochin International Airport, he said the agreement was against the spirit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's Independence Day announcement. He pointed out that the Prime Minister had said that no step harmful to the farmers would be taken by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government. Any agreement which proposed to reduce the import duty could only harm the interests of the farmers. According to him, the agreement would hit the farmers hard, especially those in Kerala. — A Correspondent
