Stones hurled at car of Chief Justice

Nine police officials suspended

Barabanki: An unruly mob on Sunday pelted stones at the car of Allahabad High Court Chief Justice in Barabanki district, prompting the Uttar Pradesh Government to suspend nine police officials, including an SHO.

Chief Justice A.N. Ray was on his way to Varanasi from Lucknow when the incident happened, Principal Secretary (Home) S.K. Agarwal told reporters in Lucknow.

Justice Ray's car was surrounded by irate villagers who had blocked the Lucknow-Sultanpur highway to protest alleged police high-handedness in a land grab case.

The Chief Justice was forced to return to Lucknow, Agarwal said.

The State Government suspended nine police officials and set up a two-member committee comprising Principal Secretary (Health) Arun Kumar Mishra and ADG (PAC) A. Palniwal to probe the incident. Six people, including an SDM, were hurt in stone-pelting by villagers which also set ablaze a police vehicle in Mohammadipur area. PTI
