Bhopal: A portion of wall around Taj Mahal palace -- built 110 years ago by Shahjehan Begum, erstwhile ruler of princely state of Bhopal -- collapsed allegedly due to heavy machines employed by local authorities during a demolition drive in the area, official sources said on Sunday. While Bhopal Municipal Corporation denied carrying out any demolition drive near the palace, eyewitnesses claimed that a portion of wall collapsed yesterday when heavy machines were used to remove a branch of tree that hung over it, state Archaeology Department Director Pankaj Rag told PTI here. Corporation officials claimed that their team had visited the area to collect debris, he said adding State Archaeology Department has lodged a complaint at Shahjehanabad police station and the matter was being probed. Efforts were on to restore the monument , he said.PTI
