Wanted new culture

Wanted new culture

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in his I-Day address appealed for a new kind of politics if the country were to achieve its potential for a prosperous and bright future. The man on the street who is groaning under inflationary pressure could hardly believe that sincere efforts are being made by those responsible to keep the prices down. There is always a tendency among the leaders to find abilis for economic failures. People are not interested in these pretensions and what they want is a square meal, shelter on their head and equal job opportunities. During the last 60 years various promises were given, radical steps announced to break the status quo and restructure the economy to create a better society for people. But one feels disillusioned.

Education and jobs need careful linking whereby the attempts of all and sundry to get a degree should be discouraged. In this process, a new discipline can be enforced and productivity increased and we would be able to get out from the man-made mess. Thus, what we need is courage to take decisions irrespective of pressure from the right and Left. There must be some rational and scientific approach in evolving a wage structure for the organised and unorganised sector. If we want prosperity for people, determination is required to establish discipline and stop moral degradation.

Speed up relief

The recent floods have caused widespread havoc and the people of Adilabad, Nizamabad, Khammam, East and West Godavari districts took the maximum brunt of the flood fury. Some 30 lakh cusses of water was released from the Dhawaleswaram barrage. The backwaters inundated more and more villages in Konaseema area of East Godavari district. The situation was quite alarming as about 350 villages were submerged.

The affected people need relief and rehabilitation in a very big way. The aerial surveys are not of much use and in fact by avoiding them the officials can be spared for field work. The breaches to the flood banks of the Godavari are causing much losses in the delta areas of East and West Godavari districts every year. Successive Governments have failed in grounding work on the strengthening of flood banks. Human life is precious and the Government should be committed for the work by mobilising required funds. Elected representatives should extend their helping hand to the official machinery for the relief work, which is an urgent need.
