PUDDE offers 17 PGD programmes; candidates need not submit original degree certificates

  • Web support services extended to include "admission confirmation status"
  • Twinning programme with Loyola College a great value addition

CHENNAI: The Directorate of Distance Education of the Pondicherry University (PUDDE) has launched online admission for candidates seeking admission for its post-graduate diploma programmes.

The Central University offers 17 post-graduate diploma programmes through distance learning and candidates applying for the programmes need not submit their original degree or transfer certificates. The University's director S. Ganesan told reporters at a press conference held at Loyola College recently that they expected more than 50 per cent of its applicants to avail of the online admission facility. The PUDDE, which was established in April 1995, currently offers four MBA degrees, 12 other post-graduate degree courses, 17 post-graduate diploma courses and seven under-graduate programmes. It has over 1,31,000 students on it rolls.

Starting this academic year, the University has offered a one-year Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS) programme. The PUDDE has 42 spot admission centres and 27 personal contact programme centres spread across the country. So far, more than 80 per cent of the admission has been made through spot admission centres. Cities, including Chennai, Madurai, Bangalore, Bhubaneshwar, Vishakapatnam and Hyderabad, have more than one spot admission centres.

The four-semester MBA programmes of PUDDE, launched in 2005-06, consist of 20 theory papers and one project work. The post-graduation degree is available in four streams - Marketing, Finance, International Business and Human Resource management. All under-graduate degree holders are eligible for the programme.

Mr. Ganesan pointed out that PUDDE extended its web support services for its students, to include a "admission confirmation status," acknowledgement of tuition fee payment, change in learner's address and publishing of personal contact class schedules.

Pondicherry University also runs a twinning programme with the Loyola College in Chennai and Christ College in Bangalore for some of its distance learning programmes. Through the twinning programmes, students can avail extended classroom sessions on weekends or evening hours of working days during the academic year instead of the usual 5-days-a-semester personal contact programme for the correspondence courses.

Mr. Ganesan said currently there were over 1,300 students enrolled in twinning programmes last year. "It is a great value addition for those who are willing spend the extra money for the contact classes."
