MANGALORE: Manasa Educational Foundation for Mental Health, Shimoga, which has be offering distance education courses in mental health, has opened its Mangalore centre at Srinivas College of Postgraduation Management Studies at Pandeshwar here, according to K. A. Ashok Pai, director of the foundation. He told presspersons here on Saturday that the foundation had been recognised as the study and research centre in mental health by the Kuvempu University and International Academy of Behavioural Medicine Counselling and Psychotherapy, Colorado, U.S.A. Dr. Pai said that graduates in any discipline could enrol at the foundation for postgraduate degrees and diplomas in mental health. He said that there was an acute shortage of psychiatrists in the State. The objective of the foundation was to prepare counsellors in mental health. Dr. Pai said only four medical colleges in the State offered training in psychiatry. Of the 27 districts in the State, 13 did not have qualified psychiatrists. Dr. Pai said the courses offered by the foundation provided clinical exposure to candidates. He said the courses would start in October.
