Heavy rain

TIRUCHI: Heavy rain lashed the city and its outskirts on Sunday night inundating several low-lying areas. The shower brought relief to the residents who were suffering from intense heat for the past few days. The rain caused waterlogging in many places restricting the movement of the motorists for some time.

Cadres plant saplings

Congress cadres led by district president Jerome Arockiaraj garlanded the statue of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi here on the occasion of his birth anniversary on Sunday. The cadres planted saplings at various places on the occasion, a press release said.

Salary hike deplored

The Federation of Welfare Organisations has expressed its protest against the increase in the salary of MPs and MLAs. In a statement, coordinator M. Ravichandran urged the State and the Central Governments to reduce its Non-Plan expenditures. It wanted a cut in the monthly salary and various benefits enjoyed by the MPs and the MLAs, which would reduce the tax burden on the public.

Plea to revise syllabi

The Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary School Vocational Teachers' Kazhagam has urged the State Government to revise the syllabi for the higher secondary vocational subjects. A resolution adopted at its State general council meeting held here recently said although the Government had introduced textbooks after a gap of 27 years, the curriculum was not in tune with the current developments.

Mettur level

The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 121.59 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Sunday. The inflow was 68,402 cusecs and the outflow 53,454 cusecs. - Staff Reporter
