Suspected food poisoning: 10 children hospitalised

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: Ten boarding students of Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, Nalanchira, were admitted to a private hospital here on Sunday after they exhibited symptoms of food poisoning. District Collector N. Ayyappan ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

The District Medical Officer has been directed to carry out a chemical analysis of the food samples.

The children were taken ill after lunch at the school mess. Some of them complained of stomach pain and a few started vomiting.

The school authorities immediately shifted 23 children to the hospital.

While nine students were discharged after first aid, 14 students, including 10 boys and four girls, had to be hospitalised.

The Collector, who visited the hospital, said there was no cause for alarm. "The children are in a stable condition," he said. Mr. Ayyappan asked the Revenue Divisional Officer to inquire into the incident. The school authorities said the students had consumed vegetarian food for lunch.
