Bangalore: It was a colourful day at the Jakkur aerodrome with kites of various shapes and sizes dotting the blue sky. At the end of the contest, three kites flying high after having dodged others were declared winners. Flyers of these kites walked away with the cash prizes of Rs. 3,000, Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 1,000, respectively. As many as 160 people participated in the event. Representatives of Kite Clinic Club, who have been holding the national level kite flying competition event since 1992, however, had a tough time this time around. The authorities in charge of the Jakkur aerodrome initially did not allow them in, saying that the ground was given out only for aviation related activities, said V.K. Rao, secretary of the club. As a result, the event started two hours late and the competition under one category, the above-23 year category, could not be held, he said. The winners were chosen based on the kite design and how long they stood up in the sky. The event is held every year to encourage the art of kite making and flying in the country, he added.
