BANGALORE: M.V. Rajasekharan, Union Minister of State for Planning, said the plans envisioned by Rajiv Gandhi had aided India in various fields, including the economic growth. He was speaking at the Rajiv Gandhi excellence award ceremony organised by the International Integrity Peace and Friendship Society here on Sunday. "Rajiv Gandhi was instrumental in commissioning the Ministry of Science and Technology to handle the technological needs of the country, which proved substantial for the overall growth of the country. The upsurge in India's economy can also be attributed to the development measures taken during the period of Rajiv Gandhi," said Mr. Rajasekharan. He added that the position of India among world's powerful countries reached a new high because of the initiatives taken by Rajiv Gandhi. Mr. Rajasekharan said, "The economic status of the 26 crore people who live below the poverty line should be given the utmost priority by following the footsteps of Rajiv Gandhi." He said the rich cultural heritage of the country should be intertwined with the technological advancements to fulfil the dreams of Rajiv Gandhi. The award ceremony honoured eight persons with "Rajiv Gandhi Excellence Gold Award" and 24 with "Rajiv Gandhi Excellence Award". The list of gold award winners included I.M. Jayaram Shetty, former Member of Parliament; Mahendra H. Singhvi, general secretary, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee; Devika Rani Wodeyar and R.V. Venkatesh. M. Bayyannachar, secretary general of International Integrity Peace and Friendship Society, said the awards had been conferred to eminent social personalities who took up some cause for the development of society. "We commemorate Rajiv Gandhi's work towards the development of the country by organising this excellence awards ceremony," he added.
