Five arrested, valuables recovered

BANGALORE: The Kalasipalyam Police have arrested five persons said to be members of an inter-State gang of robbers and recovered valuables worth Rs. 4 lakh.

The police gave the names of the accused as Yakub (34), resident of Vellore district, Tamil Nadu, Abi alias Abhilash alias Lokesh (26), resident of Basavanapura, Krishnarajapuram, Ishtiyaq Ahmed (25), resident of Ambur, Vellore district, Nasir (22), Bilekalli, Bannerghatta Road, and Shiva alias Koli Shiva (26), resident of Parvathipura, Bangalore.

The police arrested them after being tipped off by an informer near Tipu Sultan Armoury a few days ago. The five were allegedly preparing to commit robbery by threatening passers-by with lethal weapons, gagging them and relieving them of valuables inside the old Armoury building.

On inquiry, the police found that the accused had committed various robbery and dacoity at Kannur in Kerala, Chennai, Vellore and Salem in Tamil Nadu and Virajpet in Kodagu and various places in Bangalore. The recovered items included 40 mobile phone handsets, generator set, eye-testing equipment, computers, coin telephone boxes, a telephone billing machine and laser cutting machines.

Nine arrested

The City Crime Branch police have arrested nine persons on gambling charge and recovered Rs. 1,03,100 stake money in Banaswadi Police Station limits on Saturday.

The police gave the names of the accused as Shiva (32), Kodanda Reddy (47), Danavendra Reddy (41), Srinivasa (34), Babu Reddy (42), Chandrappa (55), Ramesh (42), Babu (37) and Venu (18).

The police said the accused were gambling inside a building which was under construction on 3rd Cross, 9th Main, HRBR Layout. The police have handed over the accused to Banaswadi Police who have registered a case.

Bag stolen

A gang of persons lifted a vanity bag containing a gold chain, Rs. 4,200 in cash and a mobile phone belonging to a woman from the auditorium of a school in Malleswaram Police Station limits on Saturday.

The police said Gayathri, a resident of Tindlu, Sahakaranagar, had come to the school to witness a cultural programme wherein her five-year-old son was performing. Fearing chain snatching, she reportedly kept the gold chain in the vanity bag. She had kept the bag on an adjacent seat and was watching the programme. She realised the bag was missing only after the programme was over. Malleswaram police have registered a case. Investigation is on.

Robbed

Four men robbed two persons in a house of Rs. 4,500 in cash and other valuables, including a gold chain and credit and debit cards, in the Subramanyanagar police station limits in the early hours of Sunday.

The police said the men called out the name of one of the two persons (Raghu). When Raghu's friend, Naveen, opened the doors to check, the four barged into the house brandishing knives and tied Raghu and Naveen with ropes before decamping with the gold chain, a couple of gold rings, credit and debit cards. Raghu is an employee of a private bank. Subramanyanagar police have registered a case.
