We'll function as a responsible Opposition: Deshpande

Staff Correspondent

`Congress will not resort to any undemocratic means to topple the Government'

Statements
  • `Extra-constitutional authority' running the administration
  • Development works have come to a standstill
  • Many programmes of the Congress-led Government given a go-by

Madikeri: The Congress would not resort to any undemocratic means to topple the Janata Dal (Secular)-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition Government in the State.

Instead, it would function as a responsible Opposition, former Minister R.V. Deshpande said here on Monday. Addressing presspersons, Mr. Deshpande said those who were responsible for installing H.D. Kumaraswamy as Chief Minister were now disenchanted with him.

The Government would collapse by itself and the people of the State wanted that to happen. "It is a question of time," he said. In a veiled reference to H.D. Deve Gowda, Mr. Deshpande said that "extra-constitutional authority" was running the administration in the State.

The coalition Government was the most corrupt, Mr. Deshpande said.

He was able to say it because of his experience of working in six Ministries.

He criticised the Government saying that the law and order machinery had broken down. Development works had come to a standstill and atrocities on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes were on the rise. The closing down of the mining sector, as contemplated by Mr. Kumaraswamy, would not provide solution to the problems but it depended on how the working of the sector was monitored, Mr. Deshpande said.

He rebuked the Government for backtracking on the demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry into the controversy regarding the NICE deal pertaining to Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor Project.

The Government was only bothered about the farmers coming under the purview of the project in Bidadi, Ramanagaram and Mandya, he said.

Mr. Kumaraswamy was shedding crocodile tears, Mr. Deshpande remarked.

The Government had given a go-by to many programmes enunciated by the Dharam Singh Government such as Stree Shakti, Navagrama and Ganga Kalyana.

Mr. Deshpande said he was here as per the instructions of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee to ensure participation of the Congress leaders and workers from Kodagu at the convention, to be held in Bangalore on September 3, where All India Progressive Janata Dal workers and leaders would formally join the Congress.
