Jyoti Basu falls, injured

Special Correspondent

Kolkata: Veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu slipped and suffered a fall at his residence in Salt Lake on Sunday night. He hurt his hip but an X-ray on Monday revealed no fracture. He spent the day resting.

The incident occurred when Mr. Basu was reaching out to regulate the speed of the fan in his room, his confidential assistant, Joykrishna Ghosh told The Hindu . Doctors attended on him in the course of the day.

Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Left Front Chairman Biman Bose and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, were among those who inquired about his condition over the telephone. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was expected to visit him at his residence. Mr. Bose is likely to do the same once he is back from Guwahati.

The nonagenarian former Chief Minister of West Bengal has not been in the best of health for the past few years, something that he has been publicly admitting at functions he has been attending in the past few months.
