Corrections and Clarifications

In The Hindu-CNN-IBN State of the Nation Survey on the attitudinal profile of the young, "The youth: their thoughts and aspirations" (August 16, 2006), a reader wondered why two tables, "The pattern of possession" and "Mobility is not a serious constraint", had a category "Rural urban class". Yogendra Yadav clarifies that in the first table, "The pattern of possession", it should have been "Urban lower class" while in the second table, "Mobility is not a serious constraint", it should have been "Rural upper class".

Referring to "The Food habits of a nation" (August 14, 2006), The Hindu-CNN-IBN State of the Nation Survey on Indian attitudes to food, drink and tobacco, a reader objected to the categorisation "Religious Hindus" and "Non-Religious Hindus" (in the table "More women are vegetarians"), with an explanatory note that "`Religious' Hindus are those who worship everyday; `Non-religious' are those who never worship." The reader felt such categorisation can be true for other religions as well. Yogendra Yadav, Senior Fellow (Professor), Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, clarifies: "It is a standard, social, scientific practice to sub-divide the followers of any religion by their level of religiosity as measured by their self reported religious activity (church attendance is the standard way of measuring religiosity for Christians; since that does not apply to Hindus, the frequency of worship is the best proxy). When we say `non-religious Hindu', all we mean is someone who gives his or her religion as Hindu but says that he or she never worships. The same distinction applies to every religion."

The heading "Diamond hub to be back on feat" (Business Review, August 21, 2006) should have been "Diamond hub to be back on feet". The error was in the earlier editions.

The report "Chikungunya incidence confirmed" (Kerala, August 19, 2006) stated that one of the symptoms of chikungunya is "refractive arthralgia" (severe joint pain). It should have been "reactive arthralgia". "Refractive" is a term used in optics.

Referring to the report, "I head entire Kashmir: Attique Khan" (August 18, 2006), a reader said the strapline attributed the quote "Asks India to let Kashmiris live as per their free will" to the PoK PM Attique Khan. But a line in paragraph four suggested that the quote was by the former chairman of the United Jihad Council, Mr. Tanveerul Islam. Nirupama Subramanian clarifies: "Tanveerul Islam was the host of the reception. All statements in the report are attributable to Attique Khan."

Tom Moody's column "Despite security concerns, players raring to take the field" ("Sport", August 18, 2006) stated that India have only won 19 of the 33 ODIs they have played in Sri Lanka. A reader points out that India have won only nine ODI matches against Sri Lanka (in Sri Lanka), with five no results and 19 defeats.
