CPI leader passes away
According to party sources, he died after a prolonged illness. During his long association with the CPI, he was its State committee member. He was also the national committee member of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC). PTN, as he was fondly called, was imprisoned on several occasions for participating in struggles for the working class. He has authored several books on labour laws. Staff Reporter
Jail sentence for policemen
Judicial Magistrate Vaiyapuri delivered the judgment by invoking Sections 220, 342,344, 345 and 365 (illegal custody), Section 365 (abduction), Section 380 (theft) and Section 451 (trespassing) of Indian Penal Code. The Magistrate awarded jail terms on various counts, to be run simultaneously. The accused include, SIs S.V.Krishnamurthi of Ginjee police station and R.Kannaiyan of Panruti police station, and head constables M.Perumal, P.Ramalingam and M.Ramakrishnan, and constables A.Murugesan and E.Balu. 3 run over by bus
The police said K.Neelamani (22) along with S.Kuppan (25) was riding a moped from Kootteripattu to Chinna Nergunam. Enroute, they met their friends A.Rajasekar (19) and S.Elavarasan (19) in front of a cinema house. When they were standing there, the bus, proceeding from Madurai to Chennai, ran over them. Neelamani, Kuppan and Rajasekar died on the spot. Elavarasan has been referred to a Chennai hospital. Special Correspondent
