CHENNAI: Members of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Monday walked out from the Assembly following arguments with the Treasury Benches on alleged lapses in execution of road improvement projects during the previous regime.

At one stage, all the AIADMK MLAs were on their feet, protesting against remarks made by the whip of the Congress Legislature Party Peter Alphonse. One of them, L.Ravichandran, started playing hand cymbals. The Speaker ordered his eviction.

Eviction ordered

Even as he was bodily lifted and removed by the watch and ward staff, the other AIADMK Members continued to raise slogans. Though Mr. Alphonse continued to speak, most of his remarks could not be heard. When the Speaker ordered their eviction, the AIADMK MLAs walked out.

Some of the Opposition Members, including V.Sivapunniam (Communist Party of India), C.Govindasamy (Communist Party of India-Marxist) and G.K.Mani (Pattali Makkal Katchi) brought to the notice of the Chair the remarks made by Mr.Ravichandran "distorting" the incident in the House. Leader of the House K.Anbazhagan also mentioned the issue.

Speaker R.Avudaiappan referred the issue to the Privileges Committee.

Earlier, speaking on the demand for grants for the Highways Department, deputy leader of the AIADMK legislature party O.Paneerselvam said the previous Government had undertaken road improvement and infrastructure upgradation projects on an unprecedented scale.

Claim challenged

The treasury benches challenged his claim. Electricity Minister Arcot N.Veerasamy said scrutiny of the works undertaken by the Highways department had brought out "ridiculous acts and exploitation of taxpayers' money." He warned that action would be taken soon against those responsible for the lapses.

According to one of the examples cited by him, a road repair work undertaken in the Chengalpattu division from 12.0 km to 36 km on the Madurantakan-Vennangupattu Road was completed on March 23, 2005 and Rs.4.45 lakh sanctioned. Fresh tenders were called for an improvement work on the same road from 0.0 km to 36.6 km on March 18, 2005 and Rs.1.14 crore sanctioned.

"We can cite several such instances... ," Mr.Veerasamy said.

Denying any irregularity in the execution of the road projects during the AIADMK rule, Mr.Paneerselvam said action was taken against erring officials whenever an irregularity was brought to the notice of the government.

The treasury benches could take action against those responsible for the lapses if they were proved scientifically.

The Speaker revoked the suspension of Agri S.S.Krishnamurthy (AIADMK), following a request made by Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi.
