CHENNAI : Krishna water, from the Kandaleru reservoir at Andhra Pradesh, which reached Zero Point on the Tamil Nadu border on Saturday, began flowing into the Poondi reservoir on Sunday. An initial inflow of about 270 cubic feet per second (cusecs) was received at Poondi reservoir at 4 a.m. on Sunday. The water had to travel 25 km from the Zero Point at Uthukottai, which received the water on Saturday. At present, about 290 cusecs was realised at the Zero Point as the same level of water release (about 1,300 cusecs) from the Kandaleru reservoir was maintained for the past two days, said a Public Works Department official. Recalling the Andhra Pradesh Government's assurance to provide adequate water to Tamil Nadu, the official said that the inflow was expected to be stepped up to about 1,000 cusecs, which was the full capacity of the canal in zero point, in the next few days. The Andhra Pradesh officials would check for any seepage in the Kandaleru-Poondi canal or illegal tapping en route and then increase the water release, the official said. Though some water would be diverted to Kalahasti and Tirupathi for domestic consumption, the official said that about 8,000 million cubic feet of water can be expected to be realised this year as per the agreement.
