GREETINGS FOR INDIA: Hollywood actor Will Smith
NEW DELHI: India being the flavour of the month in the land of milk and honey might no longer make headlines. And with Indian movie stars crossing over, UTV has just added its own contribution to the growing "desi'' influence in Hollywood by signing up co-productions with Fox Searchlight, Will Smith's Overbrook and Sony Pictures Entertainment. This is not the first time that UTV has signed up with Fox Searchlight; the much-hyped movie by Mira Nair, "The Namesake'', due to be released in March next year is also a joint venture with Fox Searchlight. Taking this relationship further, UTV is planning to partner with Fox Searchlight on "I Think I Love My Wife" starring Chris Rock. Giving UTV a chance to make its name known in the international market, this announcement was made by Ronnie Screwvala, CEO of UTV Motion Pictures, and Peter Rice, CEO of Fox Searchlight, in Los Angeles this past weekend. Said Peter Rice: "We are very eager to be partnering with UTV, a dynamic force in South Asian Media. After working together on `The Namesake' we jumped at the chance to collaborate again on our highly anticipated Chris Rock comedy, `I Think I Love My Wife'." Striking it big, UTV has also made a 30 million dollar deal with superstar Will Smith and his production company Overbrook Entertainment and Sony Pictures Entertainment for films to be created and distributed worldwide. They will develop films that have a global appeal. And the first two projects will be a live-action film valued at 10 million dollars and an animated motion picture at 20 million dollars. And now some great news for the fans of Will Smith: all those who missed out on his visit last time round can look forward to more of his presence now. "India is one of the most remarkable places on Earth and its motion picture industry has always fascinated me,'' said Will Smith at the announcement of the deal this past weekend.
