Display information These days, one reads a lot in dailies about the Right to Information and customer code for the banking industry. But, in practice, the customers are left in the dark. Not all banks display prominently the actual hours of work, indicating the lunch brake, if any. As a result, the poor customers are made to wait for the banks to open. The periodic revisions in the deposit interest rates too need to be promptly and prominently displayed for the benefit of the public. That the customer is the king cannot be just a catchy slogan but needs to be shown in practice so that banking becomes a pleasure and not a mere painful exercise as it is today. G.K.S. Kandasubramanian, Sivaganga. Bad road condition The 16-km long Sivakasi-Sattur single road between Anuppankulam and the four-lane highway junction is in a bad condition. Sivakasi and Sattur are busy industrial towns and a large number of vehicles, passengers and workers use this stretch pretty often. Besides, the bridge built near Sinnakkamanpatti during the British rule is dilapidated. Accidents occur every now and then. Hence, the officials concerned should convert the road into a `double road' and replace the old bridge with a new one. G. Jayaraman, Sengamala Nachiarpuram, Virudhunagar district. Fulfil needs In Paramakudi, there is only one liquefied petroleum gas agency. It does not fulfil the demands of the consumers. The company asks its consumer to register for a cylinder only after 21 days from the date of purchase of a cylinder. There after, the firm takes more than 15 days to distribute the cylinder to the consumers. It is a common problem to all LPG users. Illegal sale and use of domestic cylinders is taking place and that is why this problem. Will the authorities swing into action and ease the situation? M.V. Karki, Paramakudi. Shift to new building The State Bank of India's Paramakudi branch has many customers, including pensioners. But the bank is functioning in a building with inadequate facility. I appeal to authorities to shift the bank to another building or construct a new block in the interest of the customers. V. Rajendran, Paramakudi. Give recognition The Government Higher Secondary School at Vazhavallan in Tuticorin district is yet to get an `examination centre status' for holding public examinations on its school premises. In spite of the fact that the school having a good infrastructure and yielding good results, this issue has been dragged on for almost three years. The school authorities and the villagers have already sent many appeals and petitions to the officials concerned. I request education officials and the State Government to look into the matter with all seriousness. P. Senthil Saravana Durai, Vazhavallan. A human act This has reference to the news item `Timely help' under the `Talk of The Town' in The Hindu, dated August 11. Six persons, including three girl students of engineering course, suffered acid burns when they fell down from their two-wheelers, which skidded, because of spillage of sulphuric acid from a tanker on the Thiruvananthapuram Road in Tirunelveli. It was reported that on seeing the clothes of one of the girl students started burning when the clothes came into contact with the sulphuric acid, some of the women teachers of the Mary Sargent Girls' Higher Secondary School in front of which the accident took place, took the victim inside their school premises, extinguished the acid fumes with water, provided a new dress and rushed her to a nearby hospital. I hail their human act wholeheartedly. Kudos to the Tirunelveli Collector G. Prakash for his immediate reaction that he would hold a discussion with the police and the Transport Department to find alternative routes for lorries carrying hazardous chemicals. S. Nallasivan, Tirunelveli. Relax norms The Teachers Recruitment Board, Chennai, has called for applications for the posts of senior lectures and lectures to be appointed in government colleges and government teacher training institutes. An M.A or M.Sc. with M.Ed. is eligible to apply for the posts. But a condition that the candidates should have studied the same subject both in undergraduation and postgraduation stalls many aspirants to apply for the same, because they might have studied different subjects in their UG and PG. As the Master's Degree is a basic qualification for both the posts, the subject taken at that level will be good enough for eligibility. Hence, the TRB should relax the condition. G. Purushothaman, Tirunelveli. Butchering of animals Butchering of animals and birds for sale on roadsides has become a common sight nowadays. Many people are disturbed by the cries of the creatures while being killed. Why should flesh sellers kill the animals right in front of buyers? This can be done in a private place away from roads, without causing uneasiness to passers-by. The authorities concerned should impose a ban on such merciless killing. Lilly Ramadurai, Kovilpatti.
