GULBARGA: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday urged the Centre to distance itself from the U.S. and impose restrictions on the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) and other organisations affiliated to the Sangh Parivar to protect the integrity of the country. Addressing a rally here, central committee member of the CPI(M) Suneet Chopra accused the UPA Government of deviating from the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) for governance. He said that a slant towards the U.S. was more visible in the foreign policy, which would harm the interests of the country. Referring to the dangers posed by the Sangh Parivar organisations to the integrity of the country, Mr. Chopra said they continued their "divisive" policies and were dividing the country on communal lines. He said in view of safeguarding secularism, the Left parties decided to support the UPA Government led by the Congress. On the increasing incidents of atrocities on tribal people and Dalit women, Mr. Chopra said there was an urgent need to enact a law to protect their rights. State Secretariat member of the CPI(M) Maruti Manpade sought a law to protect the interests of workers in the unorganised sector. He urged the Centre to accept the recommendations of Dr. Swaminathan Committee. He said the rural employment guarantee scheme was not being properly implemented in Gulbarga district because of the faulty norms and stipulations in it. The Government should change the regulations and increase the minimum wage fixed in the scheme to make it more acceptable to the people. The Government should accept the Kerala model by increasing the minimum wage in the scheme to Rs. 100, he added. K. Neela, president of the Janawadi Mahila Sanghatane, spoke. Party workers took out a procession from Nehru Gunj to Super Market.
