SCENIC BEAUTY: The Dharmadom beach and `thuruthu' (island) in Kannur district are poised to attract tourists.
KANNUR: Development of the Dharmadom beach and `thuruthu' (island) is one among the projects in the district announced by Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan at a recent meeting. The project, submitted for the Centre's sanction and funds, is expected to be an extension of the four-km Muzhappilangad beach, which is among the major beachfronts already identified for being developed as tourism destinations. The `thuruthu' is located approximately 150 metres off the beach across the Anjarakkandy river at the point of confluence of the river and the sea. The `thuruthu' was acquired by the Government in 2001as part of another proposal for developing it as a tourist destination.
Proposal
The latest proposal envisages preservation of the eco-system of the island. As no construction is possible there under the Coastal Regulation Zone rules, the island has been planned as a picnic spot. Prepared by a Kozhikode-based architecture consultancy firm, the project also envisages development of the large open area from the river-mouth to the southern end near the island. This space is proposed to be developed as a public area. The facilities envisaged include proper drainage, parking space, footpaths, walkways, paved open spaces, fountains, kiosks, snack bars, pay and use toilets, rain shelter, proper lighting and seats. An oceanarium is also being planned as an added attraction. District Tourism Promotion Council secretary E.C. Raveendran said, the Dharmadom beach project, once completed, would be a new destination. A monumental entrance gate, an area for tourists to bath and swim, observation towers, a children's park and camping facilities are also in the plan. Boats would ferry tourists to the island from the Muzhappilangad and Dharmadom beaches.
