Charge of malpractice in election denied

Bangalore: D.L. Jagadeesh, who has been re-elected president of the Advocates' Association of Bangalore, has said that his efforts in the past two years to provide better facilities to the members of the Bar helped him in his victory. In the elections held on Sunday, he defeated K.N. Putte Gowda and K.N. Subba Reddy.

He refuted Mr. Subba Reddy's allegation that the election process had been vitiated by corrupt practices. The election was guided and supervised by Advocate-General Uday Holla, the former Advocate-General A.N. Jayaram and Mr. D'Sa, he said. — Special Correspondent

Four students of pharmacy college drown

BANGALORE: Four students of a pharmacy college in Chikkabanavara drowned in the Chikkabanavara tank on Sunday evening.

According to the police, Raghuveer, Naresh, Srivastava, Sukumar and Praveen, first year students at R.R. Pharmacy College and hailing from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, went for a swim in the tank. When Raghuveer and Naresh began to drown and cried for help, Srivastava and Sukhram went to their rescue. But all the four were drowned. Only Praveen survived. He was admitted to a hospital with minor injuries.

The bodies were recovered on Monday morning. — Staff Reporter

Farmer ends life

in Tirthahalli taluk

SHIMOGA: A farmer, Eshwarappa, 45, of Veerapur Nerle in Tirthahalli taluk committed suicide on Sunday, according to reports received here.

Police said he drank pesticide after his paddy crop was destroyed by water from a nearby stream that breached its banks.

According to the sources, Eshwarappa had not taken any loan. — Special Correspondent

Man shot dead

near Virajpet

MADIKERI: A 24-year-old man from Iritty in Kerala was shot dead by a group of people at Nangala village near Virajpet on Monday, according information received here. The man was working as a manager at a quarry at Nangala. A group over 50 people reached quarry around 4.30 p.m. and one of them shot the man. A dispute regarding a road is said to be the motive for the murder.

Congress stages protest for water

TUMKUR: The Congress staged an agitation at Kunigal in Tumkur district on Monday demanding that water from the Hemavathy be let into Kunigal Doddakere and tanks in surrounding villages.

Farmers and Congress activists took out a rally led by Tumkur District Congress Committee president S.P. Muddahanume Gowda. The activists blocked traffic on National Highway 48.

Phaniraj, Executive Engineer, Hemavathy Project, who was brought to the spot by the police, said water would reach Kunigal Doddakere on Monday night.

The road blockade was lifted following the assurance.

`Disrespect shown to Prime Minister'

Udupi: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president M. Mallikarjun Kharge said on Monday that the Janata Dal (S)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government had shown disrespect to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh by not inviting him to function to dedicate to the nation the Upper Krishna Project at Alamatti in Bijapur district.

Addressing party workers here, Mr. Kharge said that by not inviting Dr. Singh, the Government had overlooked the contribution of the Congress in the development of the Upper Krishna Project, Mr. Kharge said.
