Child's death causes tension at hospital

Staff Reporter

Hospital authorities to conduct probe

KOLLAM: Tension erupted at the Government Victoria Hospital for Women here on Monday morning following the death of a baby soon after birth.

Relatives of its mother, Jayashree, alleged that she was taken to the labour room only in the morning, despite developing labour pain the previous night itself. This could be the reason for the death.

Superintendent of the hospital Elizabeth John Zacharia said she had started an inquiry and would submit a report to the State Government.

However, by afternoon, P. Ramabhadran, Kerala Dalit Federation president, went on an indefinite fast, demanding action against the doctors responsible for the death.

He withdrew the fast after Dr. Zacharia promised to submit the report within 10 days and ask doctors facing allegations in this connection to stay away from duty till the inquiry was completed.

Following this, normality returned to the hospital.
