Staff Reporter

Minister for Fisheries S. Sarma and Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran take a look at a fish harvest during a visit to the Neendakara fishing harbour in Kollam on Monday.

KOLLAM: Fisheries Minister S. Sarma said on Monday that the State Government would make an allocation of Rs. 8.9 crore for the development of Shakthikulangara and Neendakara twin harbours in Kollam. Talking to reporters here, the Minister said work on the project would commence on November 1. The allocation has come from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development on a request from the State Government. Tender formalities for the development work will be completed within a month and the project would be commissioned in a time-bound manner, he said.

Mr. Sarma visited the twin harbours along with Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran, District Collector B. Srinivas and chief engineer of the Harbour Engineering Department P.I. Sheikh Pareeth.

The Fisheries Minister said a model peeling shed would be constructed at the Shakthikulangara harbour under the project. The existing auction halls at both the harbours will be renovated.

The Shakthikulangara Harbour will have a new auction hall too. There will be dispensaries and post offices at both the harbours. Steps will be taken to start dredging at the Neendakara harbour.
